Budget for the script you generate, not just the finished video
A ten-minute video is not necessarily ten minutes of narration. Screen demonstrations, pauses and music can fill part of the timeline, while discarded takes can consume more generation than the final edit contains. Start with the narration script and the revisions you expect to request.
This guide uses official information checked on November 2, 2026, plus clearly labeled planning assumptions. We have not generated audio, measured speaking speed or tested a plan's capacity. For the production steps and a practice script, use the YouTube voiceover workflow. For permission questions, read the separate commercial-use guide.
What ElevenLabs credits measure
ElevenLabs describes credits as a usage unit across its platform. Consumption depends on the plan, product, model and whether you use the website or API. For self-serve subscriptions, the allocation resets monthly; check your own billing cycle and balance before scheduling work. Credits definition
For Text to Speech, the official character-count guidance includes letters, numbers, punctuation and spaces. Audio/SSML tags and pronunciation dictionaries can affect the total. A word count alone is therefore an incomplete budget. Character-count guidance
Editorial recommendation: count the text you will actually submit, including repeated introductions and any instructions or tags included in the request. Then check the provider's displayed charge. A text editor's count is a planning input, not a guaranteed billing measurement.
Model and feature differences to check first
The Creative pricing FAQ lists one credit per character for V2 Multilingual. It describes model-specific API discounts for Flash/Turbo, which should not be applied automatically to a website session. This article does not verify a universal credit rate for every current model. Creative pricing FAQ
API pricing separately presents currency rates per thousand characters. Do not treat a Creative credit allowance as an API cash quote or mix the two billing units in one calculation. Confirm the rate applying to your account and route. API pricing
The Creative pricing page also lists different charging units for speech generation, transcription, dubbing and other products, drawing from a shared pool. A narration-only budget leaves out any credits spent elsewhere. Product usage units
Editorial recommendation: record the exact model, feature and Web/API route beside every estimate. If the displayed rate is unknown, leave the credit estimate unresolved rather than copying a rate from another workflow. Check whether a selected voice changes the displayed charge too; no voice-specific multiplier is verified here.
Credits listed by plan: a dated starting point
These are the monthly allowances shown on the ElevenCreative pricing page on November 2, 2026. They are not a promise of finished audio minutes, account-specific availability or a checkout quote. Currency prices, temporary offers and API costs are not compared here. Official plan listings
| Plan | Listed monthly credits | Editorial budget check |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 10,000 | Separate a learning exercise from commercial delivery. |
| Starter | 30,000 | Compare the full workload, including paid revisions, against the allowance. |
| Creator | 121,000 | Check whether the features and additional capacity solve a documented need. |
| Pro | 600,000 | Use a production schedule rather than one unusually busy project. |
| Scale | 1,800,000 | Include everyone sharing the planned workload. |
| Business | 6,000,000 | Reconcile the complete production budget with the applicable agreement. |
| Enterprise | Custom | Obtain the allocation and conditions in the actual proposal. |

Regenerations: check the feature's rules before clicking
The quota FAQ explains that generation, rather than downloading, consumes credits. Changing the text can cause another charge. Its website Text to Speech rules allow two free regenerations under conditions: the prompt, voice and model stay the same, the original generation is less than two hours old, and you have not refreshed or left the page. Voice-setting sliders may be changed in that specific workflow. The FAQ describes v3 differently: a Generate click yields two alternatives and is charged each time. These website allowances do not extend to the API. Generation and regeneration FAQ
Studio has its own instructions: up to two free regenerations require unchanged text, voice and voice settings. Its Generate/Regenerate control indicates eligibility. Do not transfer a playground rule about sliders to Studio. Studio regeneration instructions
Editorial recommendation: budget planned rewrites as billable unless the current control explicitly confirms otherwise. Log a replacement passage as a new request. Reusing an already downloaded file in an edit and requesting a new performance are different actions; do not regenerate solely to retrieve an export you already saved.
A worked example for four YouTube tutorials
Hypothetical arithmetic, not a test result: imagine four eight-minute screen tutorials. Each has a final narration script counted at 4,000 characters. That count is an invented input, not a conversion from eight minutes. Replace it with your actual scripts.
- First passes: 4 videos × 4,000 characters = 16,000 characters.
- Planned paid replacements: assume another 3,200 characters across the batch. This is an editorial allowance, not a typical revision rate.
- Billable practice passages: assume 800 characters. The text budget is now 16,000 + 3,200 + 800 = 20,000 billable characters.
- Conditional credit estimate: if your selected setup charges 1 credit per character, the TTS estimate is 20,000 credits. For a different confirmed rate, multiply 20,000 by that rate. The one-credit example matches the documented V2 Multilingual rate; confirm the displayed charge for your own request. Rate reference
- Other work: assume a separate 5,000-credit reserve for other activity, without implying a rate for any product. The hypothetical total is 25,000 credits. Against a confirmed 30,000-credit allowance, arithmetic headroom would be 5,000 credits.
This does not establish that Starter fits the project. You still need the required features, rights, export and real account balance. A full alternate take of every script, another language version or a changed model can change the calculation. No number of publishable minutes or completed videos is guaranteed.
Turn a video-duration target into a script budget
Mark which timeline sections actually need narration, draft those passages, then count them. If you measure the duration of your own permitted sample, use that observation to revise your script and pacing; do not treat it as a provider-wide characters-per-minute rate. Include the actual translated script if you make another language version rather than assuming identical character counts.
Your credit-budget worksheet
Copy these formulas into your notes. For one confirmed TTS rate: estimated credits = (first-pass characters + billable replacement characters + billable test characters) × credits per character + other-product credits. If models or rates differ, calculate each group separately and add the credit totals. Do not add minutes or currency directly to credits.
Open the blank credit-budget worksheet
These fields start empty. They do not calculate, submit or save your notes in the app. Copy your notes before leaving or reloading. Use project labels rather than confidential scripts or personal information.
Editorial recommendation: keep an ordinary case and a higher-revision case. If either depends on an unknown rate, mark it unresolved. After a permitted test you choose to run, compare the displayed usage with your estimate and replace assumptions with your own records.
A beginner's checklist before choosing a plan
- Choose the workflow: new narration or editing existing recordings? Use ElevenLabs vs Descript if that decision is still open.
- Check permission first: generation-period, voice and project rights belong in the commercial-use checklist, independently of capacity.
- Count the batch: include introductions, alternate versions, paid tests and corrections. Prefer real scripts to a generic video-minute estimate.
- Confirm units: use the current charge for your feature, model and route. Keep an API currency budget separate.
- Check headroom: subtract other planned credit use from the available balance. Confirm reset and rollover conditions; do not assume unused credits last forever. Allocation and rollover
- Confirm the purchase: compare plans that meet both the feature needs and your documented workload. Check current billing, promotions and account terms rather than buying a higher tier by default.

Frequently asked questions about ElevenLabs credits
How many audio minutes does each plan generate?
There is no fixed finished-minute answer in this guide. Script length, model, pace, revisions and spending on other products change the result. Use the dated allowance table and your actual script budget rather than promising a number of videos.
Are credits the same as characters?
They are related for TTS, but a character count is not a universal credit balance: the applicable rate depends on the workflow. Confirm the rate and use the worksheet. Official counting guidance
Does correcting one sentence cost a whole script again?
Budget for the text you actually resubmit and check the feature's displayed charge. Studio documents selection-based regeneration, subject to eligibility. Do not assume an edit is free or resubmit an entire script when only a passage needs review. Studio instructions
Can I budget zero credits for every retry?
No. Free regeneration is conditional and feature-specific. Check the button and remaining allowance before acting; a rewritten prompt is not the same unchanged request. Regeneration conditions
Should I choose Starter or Creator?
Use the required feature and your budget, including revisions, to compare the current offerings. This article does not verify your account's checkout or establish that either plan meets every requirement. Start with the blank worksheet.
Can enough Free credits make a commercial video eligible?
No. Capacity does not replace permission. See the Free audio conditions and check the provider's agreement before commercial use. Publication FAQ
