Start with when the audio was generated
A YouTube creator choosing between ElevenLabs Free and a paid plan needs to answer two different questions: what may I do with this recording, and what workflow can I afford to maintain? Begin with the recording's generation date and subscription status, then check the feature and rights involved. The date you upload a video is not the only date that matters.
This guide interprets official information checked on November 2, 2026. It does not grant permission for your project. We have not tested voices, compared sound quality or measured revenue. For production steps and a practice script, use the YouTube narration workflow; for editing choices, read ElevenLabs vs Descript.
Free vs paid: access and permission are different
The official pricing page lists text-to-speech on Free and a Commercial License on Starter. It lists Instant Voice Cloning on Starter and Professional Voice Cloning on Creator. These are documented plan distinctions, not claims about the quality you will obtain. Pricing source
Do not select a plan by its label alone. Decide which generation feature you will use, whether you need cloning at all, and whether the actual export fits your editor. A basic narration project and a client project needing a verified voice clone may have very different requirements.
No numeric price or quota comparison is provided here. The pricing page was accessible, but its presentation includes promotional and regular amounts. We have not verified your checkout price, billing choice, taxes or effective usage allowance. Use the ElevenLabs profile for separately dated product notes, then confirm current terms with the provider.
The commercial-use conditions to check
ElevenLabs' publication FAQ excludes commercial use on Free. Paid-generation permission is conditional on the necessary intellectual-property rights, applicable law, its terms and use policy; service-specific terms can also apply. Beta Services are excluded from commercial use and production environments. Publication FAQ
Editorial recommendation: identify the exact feature and whether it is Beta before generating final narration. Keep evidence for the script, recordings and voice permission as well as the plan. Purchasing access does not clear third-party material for you.
A short decision map for existing recordings
The following actions are editorial checks. They are not a product test or a substitute for the applicable agreement.
| Your situation | What to establish | Practical next action |
|---|---|---|
| An old practice file | Plan and feature used when it was generated. | Find the generation record before reusing it in a client deliverable. |
| Narration made during a paid term | Applicable conditions, input rights and any Beta status. | Save the accepted export and its supporting records. |
| A new line after cancellation | The status applying to that new generation. | Treat the replacement as a new asset, rather than assume the old track's status covers it. |
| A voice supplied by another person | Authority to use the recording and the relevant cloning process. | Resolve consent and verification before including the voice in your production plan. |

What happens to audio made on Free?
The publication FAQ requires attribution when Free or signed-out output is shared non-commercially: for speech, it specifies “elevenlabs.io” or “11.ai” in the title. It separately says output created outside a paid subscription cannot be used commercially. Upgrading later does not make those earlier recordings paid-period generations. Publication and attribution conditions
Example, not a tested customer case: you create a practice narration on Free, then later accept a sponsored tutorial project. Do not simply reuse that file because your account is now paid. Establish the applicable permission for the old asset; if you choose to regenerate under an eligible paid setup, document the new generation and check all other conditions too.
Do not assume an unmonetized channel makes every use non-commercial. A client deliverable or sponsorship can raise a different question from ad revenue. If your intended use is unclear, ask the provider about that specific project before relying on a general plan description.
What survives a paid subscription ending?
The cancellation FAQ says the commercial license for content generated during the subscription continues indefinitely. Read that alongside the publication FAQ's conditions and exceptions. It does not mean that every future generation is covered. The cancellation FAQ also gives no guaranteed retention period for account access to old content. After-subscription FAQ · Conditions
Editorial recommendation: download the accepted audio, script and generation record before ending a plan. File availability and permission to use a file are separate issues. Keep a record of which version you actually published.
Example: an explainer uses narration made during an eligible paid term. A month after cancellation, you need a new closing sentence. Review the status of that replacement separately. Mixing old and new passages in one edit does not erase their different generation histories.
Voice cloning: consent and verification still matter
The Instant Voice Cloning instructions require confirmation that you have the rights and consent to clone the voice. The Professional Voice Cloning instructions limit Professional Voice Cloning to your own voice, even with someone else’s consent, and require verification. Follow the requirements for the cloning method you choose; do not treat access to a feature as authorization to use someone else's identity. Instant cloning instructions · Professional cloning instructions
Editorial recommendation: for a presenter or client, record who authorized the source audio, what use was agreed, and who will complete any required verification. Resolve the provider's current restrictions before promising a deliverable. Publicly available speech is not evidence of consent.
A commercial license is not YouTube monetization approval
YouTube's channel monetization policies separately assess original and authentic content, including rules on repetitive or mass-produced material and reused content. A licensed voice track alone cannot establish that a channel qualifies. YouTube monetization policies
YouTube also publishes guidance on disclosure of realistic or meaningfully altered AI content. Review the examples for the actual video; do not assume one disclosure answer covers every kind of narration. AI disclosure guidance
Example: a creator prepares an original screen tutorial using their own demonstrations and a generated explanation. They still need to check the narration's generation history, rights in other assets, required disclosure and the channel's eligibility. Neither this example nor a paid plan promises acceptance, views or earnings.
A beginner's plan-selection checklist
- Define the use: private practice, non-commercial sharing, sponsored video or client work. Resolve uncertainty before buying.
- Inventory existing audio: list generation date, subscription status and feature for every passage you intend to reuse.
- Choose the required feature: ordinary narration, Instant Voice Cloning or Professional Voice Cloning. Check eligibility and consent requirements.
- Check exceptions: identify Beta status, additional terms, attribution and input rights for the exact workflow.
- Estimate revisions: include replacement lines and alternative takes when checking your account's usage allowance. Do not turn a credit balance into a promised number of finished videos.
- Confirm the purchase: inspect current billing, promotion duration, renewal amount, taxes and available export. No checkout quote is verified by this guide.
- Keep evidence: retain exports, scripts, permissions and the terms you checked. Revisit YouTube's separate policies before uploading.
Editorial recommendation: investigate the plan that meets your confirmed needs, rather than automatically buying a higher tier. If you only need to learn the workflow, use the practice script and keep the exercise separate from a commercial deliverable.

Questions before subscribing
Does adding attribution make Free audio commercially usable?
No. Attribution is not a replacement for commercial permission. The publication FAQ treats Free sharing and paid-generation rights separately. Official FAQ
Can I keep using paid-period narration after cancelling?
The cancellation FAQ says the license continues for content generated during the subscription. Preserve the files yourself and check the applicable conditions, including exceptions. Cancellation FAQ
Which paid plan should I buy?
First establish the feature and use you require, then check the current plan offering and checkout. A commercial-license listing does not tell you that every feature or quota you need is included. Current pricing page
Will paid narration get my YouTube channel monetized?
No outcome is guaranteed. YouTube's channel rules are separate from permission to use an audio asset. Channel policies
Have you tested these plans or compared voices?
No. This is a source-based decision guide with editorial examples, not a hands-on review, legal clearance or report of earnings. Try the blank comparison worksheet to record your own observations.
