Start with what happens after the first answer
A helpful first response is only part of choosing an assistant. If you prepare a weekly brief, the harder question is whether you can supply the right evidence, preserve the instructions and turn a draft into something another person can check. Our editorial view is to choose around that recurring loop, rather than declare one model the best for everyone.
Start with ChatGPT if your shortlist needs several kinds of work in one conversation. Consider Claude when reusable project context and an editable deliverable are central. Investigate Gemini when accessing supported Google files and connected apps is a key requirement. These are reasons to evaluate a product, not measured quality advantages or exclusive capabilities.
Documented capabilities at a glance

Choose by the work you repeat
A brief that mixes research and a spreadsheet
OpenAI documents search, structured data analysis and projects that organize chats and files. That combination makes ChatGPT a candidate when the same brief needs several input types. The potential benefit is a shorter handoff between tasks; the constraint is that a convenient conversation is not an audit trail by itself. Ask for the original source behind each claim and reconcile every important total against the spreadsheet. Capability source
A recurring document with stable background material
Claude documents project knowledge and instructions, plus artifacts that can be edited alongside a chat. This offers a useful structure for evaluating a recurring brief or reusable deliverable. It does not establish that Claude writes better than the alternatives. The project documentation also describes a staged beta transition, so inspect the interface and entitlement actually available to your account. Projects source · Artifacts source
Work whose inputs already live in Google services
Google documents Drive file input and Connected Apps, including Gmail-related requests. Gemini therefore deserves a closer look when moving material between services is your main friction. The benefit to evaluate is access convenience, not guaranteed answer accuracy. Personal and work or school accounts have different instructions; verify the permitted connection before designing a process around it. File source · Connected Apps source
Benefits and constraints that change the decision
- Reusable context versus stale context: keeping background material nearby can reduce setup work. Assign an owner to remove obsolete files and label the current version; convenience otherwise makes outdated instructions easier to reuse.
- Connected access versus permission scope: a connected workflow can avoid manual copying. Decide which data it should access before enabling it, and check your organization's rules separately from product availability.
- Editable output versus validated output: editing a polished document is useful, but appearance says nothing about its evidence. Keep a separate list of factual corrections and missing citations.
- More input versus complete understanding: a file being accepted does not prove every detail was considered. Google explicitly notes upload limits and possible missed connections in large files. Check a known detail near the start and end of your material. Upload guidance
A practical selection exercise
Use a non-sensitive project brief, a small data table and a checklist of known facts. Give each candidate the same task: produce a short decision memo, identify uncertainties and show which input supports each recommendation. This is a proposed evaluation method; we have not run it or published scores.
- Record whether the required inputs and features work on your intended account.
- Check five known facts and the table totals. Count corrections rather than judging fluency alone.
- Change one requirement, then see how much manual work is needed to revise the memo.
- Repeat later using the saved context. Measure the effort needed to find and update the right material.
Choose the candidate that fits your recurring process and review capacity. If two perform similarly on your own checks, compatibility with your existing files and permissions may be more useful than another feature on a comparison list.
Pricing: compare the entitlement you need
Current plan prices and free-plan allowances are Not verified for this article, so no numeric prices or free-access promises are presented here. Tool profiles contain separately dated plan information; do not treat an older snapshot as a current quote.
Before subscribing, identify the required tool, account type, usage allowance and billing period. Also decide whether collaborators need access. A price comparison is meaningful only after those requirements match.
Frequently asked questions
Which assistant is the most accurate?
These sources document capabilities, not a common accuracy benchmark. We have not tested the products against the same dataset. Check your important claims against original material rather than infer accuracy from this comparison.
Is Gemini automatically connected to my work files?
Do not assume access. Google describes connection settings, permissions and account-specific instructions. Confirm the supported app and your organization's policy first. Connected Apps source
Are projects unique to Claude?
No. OpenAI also documents projects for organizing chats and files. Compare the behavior you need instead of treating the feature name as a deciding advantage. OpenAI source · Claude source
Should I pay for all three to decide?
First establish which required features are accessible to you and what a valid evaluation would involve. We have not verified current free entitlements here, and this article does not require or recommend buying multiple subscriptions.
